Tonkatsu　Kawami｜Minato-Motomachi Kobe

I visited Kawami, a tonkatsu (pork cutlet) restaurant located in Minato Motomachi, Kobe.

The restaurant is located near Minato Motomachi Station, just a short walk away from Teuchi Soba Taku, which I wrote about in a previous article. This area has many great restaurants, making it hard to choose where to eat — but Kawami turned out to be a delicious spot with excellent value for money.

During lunchtime, if I remember correctly, the menu included five types of set meals: rosu katsu (pork loin cutlet), hire katsu (pork fillet cutlet), oroshi rosu katsu (grated radish with pork loin cutlet), oroshi hire katsu (grated radish with pork fillet cutlet), ebi katsu (shrimp cutlet), and shiro-mi sakana katsu (white fish cutlet).

This time, I ordered the Oroshi Hire Katsu Set Meal (¥1,100). The other set meals were also quite affordable, each priced just a little over ¥1,000.

There are about three counter seats and three to four table seats, making it a pleasant restaurant with a calm and quiet atmosphere. While browsing on my phone to research the next place I might visit, I waited about ten minutes, and then my oroshi hire katsu set meal was served.

It was a classic set meal consisting of hire katsu, rice, miso soup, and a salad. For the salad, I used the plum-flavored dressing provided at the table.

I dip the crispy hire katsu into a dashi sauce mixed with grated daikon, ginger, and green onions, and the combination of the perfectly seasoned dashi and the katsu that stays crispy even after dipping made it exceptionally delicious.

Also, the salad’s plum-flavored dressing adds a refined, elegant touch that I really enjoyed.

This time, since I chose a tonkatsu sauce made with bonito broth and grated daikon, I was able to enjoy the meal in a lighter, more refreshing way. But even if you go with the regular tonkatsu sauce, the salad helps reset your palate, so I think it works well either way.
