Ramen Ichiren|Sannomiya, Kobe

I visited Ichiren, located on Kitanozaka in Kobe Sannomiya.

This area is home to many great ramen spots, including Oku, which I wrote about the other day. Ichiren is located just past the Big Echo on Kitanozaka—there’s a small side street on the west side, and once you turn in, you’ll immediately see the sign, so it’s easy to find.

This place usually has a line out front whenever I walk by, so I decided to go a bit early. I arrived just after 11 a.m., and there were already only a few seats left—it’s that popular. I didn’t count exactly, but it’s probably a small counter-only shop with around eight to ten seats.

Today, I decided to order the simple “Chicken Paitan Ramen” (850 yen). Since it was my first time visiting, I wanted to start with something classic to get a good sense of the flavor, so I went with their most popular item, the chicken paitan ramen.

After about 10 minutes, the ramen was ready and handed to me over the counter. They said, “Please be careful, it’s hot,” when they passed it to me—and they really mean it, so be careful.

As you can tell from the color, the soup has a slightly yellow tint and looks rich and creamy. The chicken oil and essence are fully extracted, making it incredibly flavorful. Just as it appears, it’s quite thick and rich, but the umami is clean and without any overpowering aftertaste—so much so that you can’t stop bringing the spoon to your mouth.

The noodles are probably best described as medium-thin. They’re not as thin as Hakata-style tonkotsu ramen noodles, but they’re slightly thinner than standard noodles. They have just the right amount of firmness, giving a pleasant bite while allowing the soup to cling nicely to them. Even without adding extra toppings, it comes with half a seasoned soft-boiled egg and two slices of chicken chashu, along with green onions, wood ear mushrooms, and shredded red chili on top.

Another standout feature was the chicken chashu. It was well-seasoned, and the flavor lingered from the moment you put it in your mouth until you swallowed—it was excellent. Overall, the ramen has a bold, well-defined flavor, so fried rice would pair nicely, but even a simple bowl of plain rice might be a great match. That said, when I’m really hungry, I’d probably end up ordering the fried rice anyway.

I feel like I’ve found a really great ramen spot, and I’m already planning to go back. If you’re craving ramen around Kitanozaka, definitely give it a try.
